KUALA LUMPUR: The government has denied that the national civics bureau (Biro Tatanegara or BTN) institutionalises racial segregation through its orientation courses, despite persistent complaints from participants.Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said that since its formation in 1981, BTN had carried out programmes in line with its main objectives — to bolster patriotism and positive attitudes by emphasising good values and love for the country.
“BTN’s function will now be directed towards instilling the spirit of 1Malaysia, people first, performance now,” he said in a written reply to Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham (Beruas-DAP) at the Dewan Rakyat today.
Najib said BTN was responsible for raising the people’s commitment towards the country’s vision and efforts to achieve excellence and prepare the people to uphold the policies in their efforts to pursue development and prosperity.
“The information imparted to the participants is based on historical facts and does not thrive on narrow racial sentiments,” he added.
Bernama reported that Ngeh raised an allegation published in The Star on May 22 that BTN courses bred disunity as they emphasised discrimination as a fact of life.
The New Straits Times had also highlighted the possibility of BTN courses being used as a “brainwashing” tool. - The Edge Financial Daily
